Tidepool Nature Day

After the torrents of rain we had here in California earlier this week (really, torrents!) we weren't expecting such a warm and beautiful day for our -0'7" low tide outing today.

Jen gave a quick dry brush lesson drawing shells...




There was sand and water play - endless possibilities...




and plenty of tidepools for exploration and developing the balance of a tightrope walker...




Look at this brave Mama - 2yo on her hip, baby in the belly - and don't think for one second she's out there for her kids! She was fascinated.




That's what happens when you read living books with your kids. It really can't be helped. We all read Pagoo last year with our YR1ers





It's a story about a hermit crab, Pagoo, and takes you through his life cycle and as you go you learn about the tidepools and everything he encounters along his way. My daughter has referenced Pagoo often at the tidepools since reading it and has since been able to identify many of the creatures there by name. No tests, no memorization drilling. Just reading a living book and narrating... she remains curious, interested; she cares to know.




We saw juvenile anemones...




I believe this is eel grass...




starfish and anemones squished between rocks vying for the last remaining pools of water...




mussels, red striped acorn barnacles (I think), gooseneck barnacles and owl limpets...




just a few mussels...



sea urchin...




I believe these are tube worm cases and some type of coralline seaweed...
